He argued for the acquittal of the editors in the name of a native civil libertarian sensibility, which he aimed to defend against the post-war British state. He equated his defence with the fight against fascism, which he saw as identifiable in any authoritarian style of government. He saw the fight for the freedom of the editors as an extension of the battle of resistance movements to repel fascist governments across Europe. Evidently, while Herbert Read: Anarchism and Modernity 35 Read formulated a philosophy of anarchism which relied on the key figures of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century tradition, it was also firmly rooted in British intellectual sources and contemporary debates.

Read was involved in important cultural publications of the mid twentieth-century era including Art and Letters, Criterion, New Criterion and The Burlington Magazine. He lectured on art for the BBC and developed a close relationship with the cultural project of T. S. Eliot at Faber and Faber. In the 1930s and after, Read was the key promoter of significant British modernist artists Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson. He was also one of the most committed founders in 1946 of the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

Read wrote, lectured and proselytized, not just for the sake of a public understanding of art and more widespread consumption of art, but in defence of his political conviction that there are biological drives at work in the production and consumption of art which have the potential to develop the foundations for a new social order. 2 If there is a place for thinking about the transformative significance of the individual and social consumption of art, or for investigating the continuities and developments in anarchist ideas, or for exploring the anarchist relationship to British intellectual traditions, then further study of the ideas of Herbert Read are overdue.
