Marriage to Florence Wooldridge Socially, Ernest was keeping-up with Wooldridge's widow, Florence. In fact, he was more than keeping-up with her, because on December 21,1891, they were married at St.

Cuthberts, and the house became a home-away-from-home for many visitors to University College. In the summer there were parties almost every weekend, with Gertrude a memorable hostess, showing special concern for the wives of visiting academics. There were two tennis courts, and a great deal of music, including E. Starling (baritone), F. Starling (piano), and W. Bayliss (violin). The rhythmical pendular movements seem to mix the intestinal contents, for the absorption of the products of digestion depends upon digestive enzymes having access to all the food. This was known before Bayliss and Starling began their work on the subject. Their significant contribution in this field lies in their analysis of the second type of gut movement: peristalsis. Peristalsis is a more complex type of activity than pendular movement, for it is the process by which the gut contents are actually moved down the intestine.
