Human consciousness or mind is produced in the delay or interval between being affected by an image and acting; the more we delay the more we think, but the more we have thought - the more concepts we have formed - the more quickly we are able to act. Consciousness is a slowing down or delay, rendering us different from the matter - such as rocks - which is affected immediately by the light that warms it or the fluid that erodes it. This slowing down or duration of mind is enabled by contraction - which allows the past to be carried over into the present.

Whereas the completed trajectory would represent all points at once, capable then of being calculated at an average speed, the trajectory in its real duration is uneven, covering more space and altering more for some time, traversing less space and remaining relatively uniform as the curve levels out. As the history of physics and mathematics develops, the very homogenization of space that reduced time - where all points in space are given all at once and equivalent to all others, and time is nothing more than the passage from one point to another allows for a radical encounter with time.

The physical sciences are (or were) dominated by a mathematical reasoning that determines the world in advance in terms of equivalent units of measure. If, however, we think of the life of other organisms, such as the 'world' of the animals we eat, or the earth we plunder, we will realize that human space, which maps the world as so much already existent useable matter, necessarily discounts other durations; we act as if what is other than ourselves remains the same, bearing no intrinsic relations.
